Exhibitions on view at the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, including 'Realism Revisited', 'Conversations with Collections' and 'The Core Self'.
Oglethorpe University Museum of Art has a few exhibitions on view right now, including Realism Revisited, Conversations with Collections, and The Core Self. The museum is on the historic campus of Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, and it describes itself as the only small liberal arts university museum in the Southeast that regularly shows nationally and internationally recognized exhibitions.
Conversations with Collections is the one that really changes how you walk through the space. Curated by collections manager and registrar Courtney Christy, it pulls more than 30 works from the museum's permanent collection—across different media, styles, and time periods—and pairs them around shared themes. The idea is to let the artworks talk to each other, and the museum sets it up so you can join in: there are blackboards for writing down your thoughts, meditation spaces, a 'thoughts basket,' a mini-gallery alcove for sketching, and social media engagement. It's less about walking past frames and more about spending time with what's on the walls.
That connection to the university runs through the rest of the programming, too. The museum partners with Oglethorpe's Core program, and The Core Self is part of that—an annual multimedia exhibition featuring student work. Between that and Realism Revisited, you've got a mix of the permanent collection, student voices, and a focused look at realism all under one roof.
