Photography exhibition in which four artists use the medium to see and understand two unfamiliar cities, Atlanta and Marseille.
En Route: Views from Atlanta and Marseille is on view at the Emory Visual Arts Gallery through November 1, 2026. It's a photography exhibition that brings together four artists who each spent time working in a city far from home.
The setup is a swap: two artists from Marseille, France, traveled to Atlanta, and two Atlanta-based artists spent time in Marseille. While they were there, each used photography as a tool for navigation, encounter, and reflection—a way of seeing and understanding a place that was entirely unfamiliar to them. The show puts their work side by side, letting you see how two different groups of people looked at the same two cities from opposite directions.
There's a nice contrast built into the pairing, too. The exhibition frames both as important southern capitals, though they couldn't be more different in their origins. Marseille is a Mediterranean port city that dates back to ancient Greece around 600 BCE. Atlanta is a landlocked city founded as a railroad terminus. One is defined by the sea and deep antiquity; the other by the rail and a much more recent start. Seeing how the artists navigated those distinct environments is a good part of the draw.
