Workshop with teaching artist Neha Bhatt to create one-of-a-kind silk scarves by imprinting leaves, plants and flowers through eco printing.
Atlanta Botanical Garden is hosting an Eco Printing Workshop on Saturday, October 17, from 10 AM to 1 PM. The session is led by teaching artist Neha Bhatt, and the goal is to walk away with a silk scarf you printed yourself.
Eco printing is a process that imprints images of leaves, plants, and flowers directly onto protein fibers like silk using a water bath. During the workshop, you'll compose your own design on a silk scarf using plants you bring from home, and the result is a one-of-a-kind piece of wearable art. It's a hands-on session where you're the one arranging the layout, so what you bring from your own yard or a local walk will determine how your scarf turns out.
There's a bit of a trick to what works best. High-tannin leaves—like oak, maple, rose, hickory, sumac, and blackberry—are recommended, along with colorful flowers like carnations and daisies. On the other hand, thick, woody, or waxy-leaved plants like camellia and magnolia aren't recommended, so keep that in mind when you're gathering your materials. The more you think about what you're bringing, the more control you'll have over the final print.

Neha Bhatt first encountered Indian batik, natural and indigo dyeing, block printing, and hand sewing in a middle school in India. These days she works with the Fulton County School System to bring arts-based programs to learners of all ages, so she's used to teaching people who are coming at this from different skill levels. The workshop runs from 10 AM to 1 PM at the garden, 1345 Piedmont Ave NE, and costs $110, or $105 for members.
