Colored pencil still-life drawing class led by artist Carol Anne Sutherland, in which students draw the autumn harvest at the Atlanta Botanical Garden.
Drawing the Fall Harvest kicks off at the Atlanta Botanical Garden on Tuesday, November 3, and runs through December 8. It's a colored pencil still-life class taught by artist Carol Anne Sutherland, meeting every Tuesday from 10 AM to 1 PM. There's no class on November 24, so you'll have a week off for Thanksgiving.
The subject is exactly what the title says: fall harvest fruits and vegetables. The Garden frames the session around the image of the cornucopia, when the harvest spills out and reminds us of what the earth provides. You'll spend the mornings working in colored pencil to build still-life drawings from that. If you're coming in with a bit of a background in drawing, you know that still life is one of the best ways to get your eye for form and light, and doing it with the colors of autumn gives you plenty of rich tones to play with.
It's also part of something larger. The class is one session in the Garden's Botanical Drawing Program, which takes students through the natural world in stages: you start in black and white and build your technique until you can render trees in graphite pencil and orchids in colored pencil. If you stick with the full program—140 classroom hours across nine courses and a workshop—you earn a Botanical Drawing Certificate and get to take part in a Student Drawing Exhibition at the Garden. This particular session is one of those steps.

Registration closes on November 1, so you'll want to sign up before then. The cost is $230, or $220 for members, and you'll need to bring your own materials. Classes run Tuesdays, November 3 through December 8, from 10 AM to 1 PM at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, 1345 Piedmont Ave NE.
