School production of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical 'The Sound of Music' by the pupils of St Margaret's School for Girls.
St Margaret's School for Girls is bringing The Sound of Music to the Aberdeen Arts Centre this November, with the whole cast made up of the school's own pupils. It's a run of four performances across the first week of the month, starting on Wednesday 4 November.
Most of us know the story by heart: a young nun is sent to be governess to the seven children of the widowed Captain von Trapp, and the two very different worlds eventually find a way to fit together. It's based on the memoir of Maria Augusta Trapp, and the family portrait is set against the backdrop of the Austrian Alps. The songs are the things that really carry it — 'Do-Re-Mi', 'My Favourite Things', 'Sixteen Going on Seventeen', 'Edelweiss' and 'Climb Ev'ry Mountain' are all in there. As the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, the family is eventually forced into a moral decision.
It was the final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein, and it went on to win five Tony Awards and five Oscars. This production is staged at the Arts Centre, an independent venue run by the charity Castargate Arts Ltd for more than a quarter of a century, whose Children's Theatre opened in the 1950s as a pioneering youth theatre.
