Black-tie opera gala marking 120 years of His Majesty's Theatre, with the Orchestra of Scottish Opera and soloists from Scottish Opera.
Scottish Opera are coming to His Majesty's Theatre on Thursday 12 November for the HMT 120 Opera Gala, a one-off concert marking 120 years of the theatre. It's part of the venue's HMT 120 anniversary campaign, so it's a bit more than just a night of singing — it's a proper celebration of the building as Aberdeen's civic stage.
It's a concert-gala rather than a staged production, which means the focus is on the music rather than sets and costumes. The Orchestra of Scottish Opera will be conducted by Harry Sever, with five soloists taking the lead: soprano Paula Sides, tenors Sang-Eup Son and Jamie MacDougall, mezzo-soprano Chloe Harris and baritone Ross Cumming. The programme is split into two distinct halves. The first is all opera, with Bizet's Carmen, Verdi's Rigoletto, and Puccini's Turandot, Gianni Schicchi and the rarely-heard Edgar. The second half shifts to operetta and musical theatre, with The Merry Widow, South Pacific, Carousel, Kiss Me Kate and Oklahoma!.
Between the two halves, there's a 20-minute interval, and the whole thing runs for about two hours. If you're fancying a full evening of it, there's a pre-show three-course dinner at The Terrace for £50 per person. The night is billed as a black-tie affair, so it's a good excuse to get dressed up if that's your thing.
