Concert in a Cold War nuclear bunker where clarinettist Sarah Watts and electronic musician Duncan MacLeod play works by Gooch, MacLeod and Watts inspired by Gaelic landscape.
Sarah Watts and Duncan MacLeod play the Bervie Brow Research Station on Friday 23 October, as part of soundfestival. Watts is on clarinet and contrabass clarinet, MacLeod on electronics, and the programme brings together three works by Anderinna Gooch, Duncan MacLeod and Sarah Watts herself. Each piece draws on Gaelic landscape, heritage and culture, and on places closely tied to the composers, so the music is meant to work as a kind of sonic landscape.
The venue is a good part of the draw here: a hidden Cold War nuclear bunker in Inverbervie. Its history is as much a part of the evening as the music, and it's a site you won't stumble across by accident. A couple of practical things to keep in mind before you head out: the bunker entrance is only accessible by stairs, and the surrounding grounds are uneven and can get slippery when wet, so keep that in mind when you're planning your trip.
The concert is one of many during soundfestival, a festival of contemporary sound art and new music running across Aberdeen and the North East from 22 to 31 October. Over those ten days there are performances, soundwalks, talks, family events and installations, with a Pay What You Can option. Running alongside it is 'Where Listening Begins' at Aberdeen Science Centre, an interactive display on the science of how we hear. This particular performance is supported by the PRS Foundation and the Hope Scott Trust.
