The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra launches its new season with Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto played by Chloƫ Hanslip, with guest conductor Mihhail Gerts.
The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra open their new season at the Music Hall on Friday 30 October, with British violinist ChloĆ« Hanslip taking the lead. It's a full evening of orchestral music, and the big name on the bill is Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D major ā a sunlit, expansive work that's described as one that both sings and dances.
Guest conductor Mihhail Gerts has built the rest of the programme around two Estonian pieces, both from his home country. The first is Arvo PƤrt's Swansong, a short work of about eight minutes by the world's most performed living composer, who's now in his nineties. The second is Eduard Tubin's Symphony No.4 'Lyrical', which runs for around thirty-six minutes and is presented as the beauty, defiance and raw power of Estonia's greatest twentieth-century symphonist. Between the two, they make up the bulk of the night's orchestral writing, with the Tchaikovsky concerto sitting in the middle.
This is the first of the BBC SSO's new season at the Music Hall, and there's more to follow. Later in the year comes Christmas Classics conducted by Jamie MacDougall, an Aberdeen festive favourite that sells out every year, and a concert with Ilan Volkov conducting Beethoven's Seventh alongside a BBC commission by Laila Arafah.
