Afternoon of readings from the 'Tides in Time' anthology, with music from the Aberdeen folk trio One Warm Line, at the Aberdeen Arts Centre.
Pushing Out the Boat are holding a readings afternoon at the Aberdeen Arts Centre on Saturday 14 November, and it's a big one for them. The whole thing is built around Tides in Time, an anthology they've put together to mark the magazine's 25th anniversary. It gathers the best work from all 18 issues since they started in 2000, with 100 contributors in total, and it was made possible by an Aberdeen City Council Culture Investment grant.
The afternoon itself brings a good chunk of that anthology to life. There'll be eight poets and five prose writers reading their work, and 24 pieces of art on display, so you'll get to see the visual side of the magazine as well as hear the writing. Adding to that is the Aberdeen folk trio One Warm Line, who'll be playing sea shanties throughout.
For those who haven't come across them, Pushing Out the Boat is North-East Scotland's biennial magazine of new writing and the visual arts, run entirely by volunteers as a registered charity. They publish prose, poetry and art, including work in Scots and Doric, and they've always balanced local voices with a global outlook. Over the years they've published prize winners like Sheila Templeton, PĂ draig MacAoidh and Sheena Blackhall. The name itself plays on the English idiom for generosity. Editor Peter Burnett described looking back through the archives for this anthology as a revelation, and that's a good way to think of the afternoon: a chance to hear the best of the last quarter-century in one go.
