Experimental radio art piece 'apeiron' by Leona Jones, combining a live radio broadcast, communal listening and a live interview with the composer.
Leona Jones brings apeiron to Station House Media Unit on Friday 23 October, as part of soundfestival, which runs across the city from 22 to 31 October. It's a piece of experimental radio art that Jones describes as exploring our elemental relationship with the sea, listening and constant change. It's not a gig in the usual sense: the performance combines a live radio broadcast with communal listening and a live interview with Jones, blurring the line between hearing something on your own and sharing it with a room.
The work started in Stromness, Orkney, where Jones recorded the sounds of the Orcadian sea and local residents reading aloud the town's tide-times. Those recordings form the soundscape. On the day, Jones is joined by Audrey Chen on solo voice, and the piece draws on the work of SWR, the German public radio broadcaster that commissioned, developed and produced it, with producer Frank Halbig, studio engineers Daniel Senger and Robin Zwirner, and 22 volunteer voices recorded in Stromness.
apeiron has already picked up the Karl Sczuka Prize for radio art, and this is one of its live presentations. Because it's part of soundfestival, it sits within a wider run of events across Aberdeen that stretch from 22 to 31 October, so there's more to catch around it if you're in the mood.
