Hamish Hawk plays The Tunnels in Aberdeen with his album 'Intriguer / Tenderness'.
Hamish Hawk plays The Tunnels on Saturday 24 April, an album launch show for Intriguer / Tenderness. The record comes out on 2 April via SO Recordings, so the gig arrives just a few weeks after the songs are out in the world. It's a ten-track album and follows 2024's A Firmer Hand, which was described as queer-coded.
Intriguer / Tenderness is built around two opposing voices that Hawk says represent conflicting sides of himself: the performer on stage and the person away from it. Intriguer is the remote, charismatic, aggressive and grandiose one; Tenderness is pliant, troubled and vulnerable. The two collide across themes of lust, deceit, ambition, consent and pain. Hawk recorded the album with guitarist Andrew Pearson, who put it bluntly: "nobody seems to be getting on in this album."
Hawk is an Edinburgh songwriter who pushes back on being called a "literary songwriter". He says his lyrics come from books, from what he hears kids saying, from Coronation Street and from the imagery of his dreams, rather than from musical influences. That mix of the mundane and the imagined is a good way to get a sense of where he's coming from.
