Alan Fletcher, former lead singer of the rock band Waiting Room and star of Neighbours, plays a show with a five-piece band at Tunnels.
Alan Fletcher plays Tunnels on Friday 23 October, with a five-piece band behind him. He's been working as an actor and musician for more than 45 years, and for a good chunk of that time he was a household name in Australia, the UK and Europe as Dr Karl on Neighbours, a role he played for 30 years. On the music side, he fronted the rock band Waiting Room, which held a 12-year residency in Melbourne and played ten sell-out UK tours.
These days he's leaning into Americana and country, and he's spent the last 18 months writing and recording The Point, a new album of original songs produced by Lachlan Bryan and Damian Cafarella. He's drawn on a catalogue of Americana and country, citing Jason Isbell, John Prine and Guy Clark as influences. Critics have pointed to his vocal quality, his guitar playing and a balance of thoughtfulness and fun.
It's a full band on the night, so it'll be a proper set rather than a stripped-back affair. The music sits in that Americana and country territory he's been working in, with The Point as the latest addition to his writing. If you're familiar with the names he mentions β Isbell, Prine, Clark β you'll have a good handle on the kind of songwriting that's at the heart of it.
