The York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir are performing at St Lawrence Parish Church on Saturday 11 July. Most around here know them as 'The Phil', a name that's stuck for nearly a century — they were founded back in 1925 and currently have over 60 members. They're under the patronage of the Lord Mayor of York, and they've played some of the bigger stages in the country and beyond, including the Royal Albert Hall, Castle Howard and York Minster.
What they're known for is a broad repertoire that doesn't stick to one lane. A single concert can pull from contemporary and classical, West End and opera, folk and spirituals, so you're likely to hear a fair range of styles in one sitting. It's that variety that's their thing, rather than sticking to a single tradition.
Beyond the singing, they've got a strong local presence. They're community-focused, often supporting local charities and keeping a steady place in the city's cultural life. They're always open to new members, and they run a 'Friend of The Phil' membership for anyone who wants to follow their musical journey a bit more closely.
