Wright&Grainger are back at Theatre@41 with Scratch an Itch, an improvised theatre piece that runs from 3 July through to 20 September. It's a long run, so there's plenty of time to catch it if you're around York over the summer.
As the title suggests, this isn't a polished, rehearsed play. It's built on improvisation, with music, words and story all coming together in the room rather than from a script. The company describes Scratch an Itch as a rare moment of public-facing recklessness, and they're quite open about why: they've got some brand new stuff they want to try out in front of an audience. That's the whole point of the thing — taking new ideas and testing them live, rather than keeping them tucked away in a rehearsal room.
Because it's improvised, the music and the storytelling aren't fixed. The words and the story shift as they go, so what happens on one night won't be the same as what happens on another. If you're the kind of person who likes to see how a piece of theatre is actually built, this is exactly that: the process of making it happening right in front of you.
