Live Victorian carol performances by Same Difference Arts throughout the day on the museum's recreated Victorian street, Kirkgate, included in general admission.
Same Difference Arts are bringing their Victorian Carol Singers to York Castle Museum every Saturday from 14 November to 19 December 2026. They'll be performing throughout the day, so you can drop in whenever suits you rather than working around a set time.
The singing takes place on Kirkgate, the museum's recreated Victorian street, which for Christmas is dressed with twinkling garlands, decorated trees and snow-covered cobbles. The sets draw on traditional Christmas carols and period ditties, with O Christmas Tree, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and Hark the Herald among the songs they'll be working through. It's the kind of thing you'll recognise from the first few bars, and it's performed live right there on the street.
There's more to it than just the singing, too. You'll run into Victorian characters along the way, including Green Father Christmas and Ebenezer Scrooge, and the carols sit alongside storytelling and family activities. The museum bills Kirkgate as one of York's most atmospheric Christmas experiences, and it's easy to see why when you're standing on a snow-covered Victorian street with carols ringing out around you.

It's a good one for a Saturday outing with the family, and since the singing goes on throughout the day, you can time your visit to catch a set and then wander through the rest of the museum. The performances are included in general admission, so there's no extra ticket to book on top of your entry.
