University Choir & The 24 are at Central Hall, Campus West, University of York on Saturday 19 December, with Robert Hollingworth conducting. It's a nineteenth-century Christmas concert, and the programme pairs Felix Mendelssohn with his sister, Fanny Hensel. The organisers describe it as familiar music you may not have heard before, set alongside other seasonal fare.
On the Mendelssohn side, you'll hear Vom Himmel hoch and Christus, the opening of an unfinished oratorio. Vom Himmel hoch draws on Luther's Advent tune, much as Bach had done a century before. Fanny Hensel's Lobgesang ('Hymn of Praise') sits alongside them, so the two siblings share the bill. The programme notes imagine the whole thing as new compositions premiered in a nineteenth-century concert hall bedecked for Christmas.
