York Settlement Community Players are taking Underdog: The Other Other Brontë to Theatre@41, with the run starting on Tuesday 13 October and continuing through to Saturday 17 October. It's an irreverent retelling of the lives and legends of the Brontë sisters, written by Sarah Gordon.
Most of us know the Brontës as a trio, but this one puts the spotlight on Anne—the 'other, other one'. Charlotte Brontë herself admitted that Anne became known as the third sister, and that's exactly where the play starts. It's less about well-behaved women and more about the messy, human side of their lives: the power of words, sisterhood, love, jealousy, support, and competition. If you've only ever thought of them as quiet figures in a parsonage, this is a different way in.
It's not a brand-new script, either. Underdog premiered at The National Theatre in 2024, so it's had a proper run before landing here in York. The York Settlement Community Players are an amateur company, and this is their take on it, bringing a story about three sisters from the Yorkshire Dales back to a local stage.
