Author talk with Dorothy Tse in York for her acclaimed novel City Like Water.
Dorothy Tse is coming to Topping & Company Booksellers on Monday 30th November, 7pm, for a talk about her debut novel, City Like Water. It's a Hong Kong writer visiting York, and the book is the one that's put her on the map.
City Like Water has been picking up a fair bit of noise, and one of the names attached to it is China Miéville. He described being ushered into Tse's hallucinatory city as "a revelation, an unnerving gift" — which gives you a decent sense of the kind of territory she's working in. If that sounds like your thing, this is your chance to hear her talk through it in person.
The evening is hosted by Topping & Company Booksellers, their new York shop that opens in 2026 opposite York Minster. It's a proper bookseller's event, so it'll be a reading and a talk rather than a formal lecture, with the author there to talk about the book and take questions.
