Velma Celli brings her show to the Joseph Rowntree Theatre on Sunday 18 October, starting at 18:00. It's billed as an evening of camp cabaret, and the description doesn't hold back: an all-live-singing, all-dancing drag extravaganza. If you're not familiar with the name, Velma Celli is the stage persona of West End performer Ian Stroughair, who's been touring as the character for sixteen years. He's known as 'The UK's Queen of live vocal drag', and the show is built around that — singing and dancing live on stage rather than lip-syncing.
Stroughair's West End credits include some of the big ones: Cats, Fame, Chicago and Rent. He's also the only drag queen to have appeared in both EastEnders and Coronation Street, so there's a fair bit of professional stage and screen work behind the persona. Velma Celli herself is described as an international, multi-award-winning cabaret superstar and icon, and she's been performing for audiences across the globe for over a decade and a half.
