The Trembling Land

The Persian Trio play The Trembling Land at the National Centre for Early Music on Friday 14 November, 7:30pm to 9:30pm. It's a night that brings classical Persian music into a contemporary setting, with the trio blending traditional sounds with electronic elements.

The line-up brings together three Iranian musicians living in different European cities: Samin Ghorbani, based in Germany, on Persian classical voice; Rouzbeh Esfand, in the Netherlands, on electronics, clarinet and arrangement; and composer Vahid Taremi, who plays the shurangiz. The shurangiz is a modern instrument that combines elements of the traditional Persian setar and tar, and it's Taremi who composed the music they'll be performing.

They describe the sound as "the sound of their shadows from a Trembling Land", and they talk about leaning into an atmosphere of what remains unspoken rather than a straightforward retelling of the past. It's that tension between the classical and the contemporary that sits at the heart of the evening, with the electronics and the shurangiz working around Ghorbani's voice.

The concert is at the NCEM, in St Margaret's Church on Walmgate, YO19TL. Tickets are £24, with concessions at £22 and under-35s at £8. It runs from 7:30pm to 9:30pm.
