Spanish medieval music, poetry and dance by ArteSonado, inspired by the court of Alfonso X the Wise, within the York Early Music Christmas Festival.
ArteSonado bring Spanish medieval music to the National Centre for Early Music, St Margaret's Church on Monday 7 December, as part of the York Early Music Christmas Festival. It's a performance built around the 13th-century court of Alfonso X the Wise, weaving together the Christian, Jewish and Muslim traditions that crossed paths there.
They're drawing from a wide range of medieval sources: the Cantigas de Santa María, the Llibre Vermell, songs by Theobald I of Navarre, the Codex Rossi and Sephardic traditions. Rather than just playing them one after another, they thread them through music, poetry and dance, following a female figure moving through the elements of nature as a path of transformation and union between cultures. It's a show that combines sound, spoken word and movement, and it's promoted in association with the Instituto Cervantes.
The ensemble consists of Berta Benedicto on voice, Elisabet Segura on flutes, Sarabel Delgado on fiddle and voice, Emiliano Evrard on gittern and citole, Miguel Ángel Royo on percussion and Sonia Rillo on dance. The gittern and citole are both plucked string instruments from the period, and with voice, flutes, fiddle and percussion, the group covers the range of sounds you'd find in a medieval court.
