The Secret Art Songs of Women Latina Composers

Lorena Paz Nieto and Helen Glaisher-Hernández are performing at the National Centre for Early Music on Tuesday 17 November, a concert of art songs by Spanish and Latin American women composers. It's part of The Secret Art: Mujeres ¡Presentes!, a project that brings together these voices in one place. The evening is promoted in association with Instituto Cervantes.

Lorena Paz Nieto is a Spanish soprano with a fair few awards behind her: she's won the Oxford Lieder Young Artist Platform Award, the Ludmilla Andrews Russian Song Prize, and was named 'Vocalist of the Year' at the LUKAS awards. She's joined on piano by Helen Glaisher-Hernández, a British-Hispanic pianist from a new generation of Latinx practitioners. Together they'll be working through art songs by women composers from Spain and Latin America, so the programme draws from both sides of the Atlantic.

There's more to the project than just this one night. The concert is preceded by a pre-show talk with the artists, so you can hear them talk through the music before they start. The project also runs a half-day workshop, Come and Sing with Odaline de la Martinez, which draws on 17th-century Mexican convent music, Afro-Cuban beats and Rio Carnival rhythms.

The concert runs from 7.30pm to around 9.00pm, with the pre-show talk starting at 6.50pm. Tickets are £24, with concessions at £22 and an under-35s price of £8. You'll find it at the National Centre for Early Music in St Margaret's Church, Walmgate, YO19TL.
