The 75th-anniversary UK tour of Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap, starring Nicholas Bailey and Susan Penhaligon.
The Mousetrap is coming back to the Grand Opera House from Monday 21 to Saturday 26 June 2027, as part of its 75th-anniversary UK tour. It's Agatha Christie's 1952 murder mystery, and if you've never seen it, the premise is a classic: seven strangers are cut off in a remote country guesthouse during a deadly snowstorm, and when a murder happens, the house becomes a trap. It's the kind of whodunnit that works best when you're sitting in a room with a crowd, trying to piece it together as the play unfolds.
Two familiar faces are leading this run. Nicholas Bailey takes the role of Major Metcalf, and Susan Penhaligon plays Mrs Boyle. You'll likely recognise Bailey as Dr Anthony Trueman in EastEnders, a role he's played on BBC One since 2000. Penhaligon first made her mark in the drama Bouquet of Barbed Wire before becoming a household name as Helen Barker opposite Dame Judi Dench in the ITV sitcom A Fine Romance.
There's a bit of history behind this one, too. The Mousetrap has been running at London's St Martin's Theatre since 1952, where it holds the Guinness World Record as the world's longest-running play. It celebrated its 30,000th West End performance on 19 March 2025, so this 75th-anniversary tour is marking a pretty huge milestone. This production is put on by Brian Fenty, and it's not the play's first time in York — it last visited the city in March 2023 during its 70th-anniversary travels.
