A medieval folk play by Skald Theatre Group, set in the aftermath of a hunting party, performed at Bedern Hall.
Skald Theatre Group are bringing The Lament of a Hart to Bedern Hall this November, a medieval folk play they've written and produced themselves. It runs over three nights, the 18th, 19th and 20th, so you've got a few dates to choose from if you can't make the first one.
The story picks up in the aftermath of a hunting party. Henry and his men are returning from the chase of a mythical golden stag, reveling in their victory while a monstrous storm rages around them. In the middle of it all, a strange woman arrives at the door seeking shelter and hospitality. From there, the play asks whether the golden stag is Henry's final prize, or whether his obsession will drive him to offer much more than he can give.
It's a folk drama in the medieval tradition, and since Skald wrote and produced it, the whole thing comes from their own stable. The setting—a hunting party returning home in a storm—is classic folk territory, and the arrival of a stranger at the door is a trope that's worked for centuries. The play plays with that, turning a victory celebration into something a bit more unsettled as the night goes on.
