A choral workshop led by Paul Gameson focusing on Renaissance Christmas pieces by Arcadelt and Mouton, for singers and instrumentalists.
Paul Gameson leads a Renaissance Christmas workshop at Bedern Hall on Saturday 12 December, run by the National Centre for Early Music. It's a morning for singers and instrumentalists to get inside the music of the period, rather than just singing through it.
The programme centres on Jacques Arcadelt's Missa Noe Noe and the motet it's based on, Jean Mouton's Noe, noe, psallite, alongside Arcadelt's motet Hodie Beata Virgo Maria. Working through the Mass and its source side by side gives you a proper look at how a Renaissance composer built a larger work from a single piece of music. A bit of choral experience and the ability to sight-read are helpful, but the scores are made available online in advance, so there's plenty of time to study the parts before you meet.

Registration and coffee start at 9:30am, with the workshop itself running from 10:00am to 1:00pm. Tea and coffee are provided, but you'll need to bring your own snacks for the break. Towards the end, friends are welcome to drop in for an informal run-through at 12:45pm, so if you've got someone who wants to hear what you've been working on, they can pop in for the final stretch. It's £25 to take part, or £15 if you're under 35, and you'll need to book by Friday 27 November. Bedern Hall is on Bartle Garth, St Andrewgate, YO1 7AL.
