Exhibition exploring the 1605 Gunpowder Plot from the perspective of York, featuring rare artefacts and historical context at The Bar Convent.
The Bar Convent is hosting The Gunpowder Plot: York's Untold Story, an exhibition that runs from 16 September to 5 December 2026. Most of us know the basic story of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 — Guy Fawkes and the plot to blow up Parliament — but this one looks at it from York's perspective. It's less about the legend and more about the context, the conspiracy, and the fallout that followed.
There are some rare artefacts on display. One is the cross of Edward Oldcorne, who was executed after the plot, and another is a collection of items linked to Margaret Clitherow, whose death is described as a catalyst for the conspirators. The exhibition connects these figures to the city and traces how the whole thing affected York, and how it shaped the women who went on to found The Bar Convent. The venue itself fits the story: it was established in the shadows of the plot, at a time when the Catholic faith was illegal in England.
