This isn't your standard Shakespeare production. The YSP have gone with a piratical theme, and they're leaning into it: the whole thing is set aboard the ship of Captain Antipholus and his first officer Dromio, sailing the waters of the island of Ephesus. The plot itself is built on mistaken identity, and the production adds slapstick to the mix, so it's more of a rowdy night out than a quiet evening in the stalls. If you've never seen it, the story is a classic case of twins being separated and then crossing paths in the same city, with everyone getting the wrong person—and the pirate framing just gives it a new way to play out.
It's co-directed by Katie Leckey and Emily Carhart, who describe it as a pirate-themed reimagining of the comedy. The production is part of the York Shakespeare Project's 25th anniversary, so it's a bit of a milestone for them. It also sits within the wider York International Shakespeare Festival 2026, which runs from 21 April to 3 May, though this particular show comes later in the year.
Tickets are on sale, and you can book them through the venue's box office at boxoffice@41monkgate.co.uk. The run is 21–24 October at Theatre@41, Monkgate, York.
