The Basement Comedy Club is back at City Screen on Sunday 16 August, the latest in its run of monthly stand-up nights. It's a regular fixture here, running on the third Sunday of every month, so if you miss this one, there's usually another just a few weeks on.
The line-up for the night brings together three comedians with very different backgrounds. Lauren Pattison was an Edinburgh Best Newcomer nominee in 2017 and a Best Show nominee in 2022, and she also hosts the podcast Conversations Against Living Miserably. Aaron Simmonds has appeared on QI, Stand Up Sketch Show and Russell Howard Hour, with comedy grounded in his disability. Nicola Mantalios won the 2025 Funny Women competition and is known for her character 'Zoe'. Holding the whole thing together is MC Aaron Wood, who has three sell-out Edinburgh Fringe runs and more than 100 million views online.

The night takes place in The Basement, a 100-capacity licensed room tucked below the screens at City Screen Picturehouse, 13-17 Coney Street. The cinema itself is housed in the old Yorkshire Herald print works and has been part of the city's arts scene since January 2000. The Basement isn't just for comedy, either — it also hosts live music, burlesque, drag, spoken word and theatre, and can be hired for private events. If you're arriving early, the cinema's riverside terrace looks out over the Ouse, and its in-house kitchen turns out seasonal menus. The night runs on the third Sunday of every month, so it's a reliable one to keep in the back of your mind for a Sunday evening in York.
