The Art of Kokedama

The Art of Kokedama is coming to York Art Gallery on Saturday 29 August, from 11:00 to 12:00. It's a creative workshop led by Alice from The Outside In, and it's all about the Japanese art of growing plants in moss-covered balls.

If you've never come across it, kokedama is just that: the root ball of a plant is bound in a clay soil mix and then wrapped in moss, so it doesn't need a pot to grow. Alice takes you through the process step-by-step, so you'll leave with your own moss ball plant and the know-how to keep it going. All the materials and guidance are provided on the day, along with aftercare instructions and a bag to carry your finished plant home. Once it's back with you, you can either hang it or display it on a decorative plate or a piece of wood.

The session is suitable for ages 10 and over, and under-18s need to be accompanied by an adult. Tickets are £25 per person, and they're held in The Studio at the gallery. It's a sold-out session, so you'll need to keep an eye on the gallery's listings if you're hoping for a spot.
