A feel-good 16-piece swing band performs live, celebrating the golden age of swing with music from Glenn Miller and Broadway favourites.
Swing When You Sing returns to the Joseph Rowntree Theatre on Sunday 24 January 2027, with the show starting at 7:30pm. It's a big-band night, and the scale of it is a good place to start: a 16-piece swing band plays live on stage throughout, so the sound comes from the room rather than a backing track. The set celebrates the golden age of swing, with Glenn Miller's music at the centre, alongside Broadway favourites, soaring ballads and classic hits.
It's a returning production, and the cast has grown since it last played. Returning audience favourites are joined by an expanded line-up of performers, so the show is larger than the previous version. The 16-piece band stays on stage for the whole run, providing the live foundation for the vocals and the arrangements.
The show is billed as a feel-good one, and the timing is part of the pitch: it's set for late January, described as a way to beat the post-Christmas blues. With the big band live on stage, the music is the main event, and the set moves through the different moods of the era — the upbeat swing, the Broadway numbers, and the slower ballads.
