York Celebration Singers perform musical theatre and film favourites with a four-course luncheon.
York Celebration Singers are taking over Middlethorpe Hall & Spa on Saturday 12 September for Songs from Stage and Screen: An Afternoon of Musical Delights. It's a long lunch with a live set running through it, so you're sitting down for the whole thing rather than just popping in for a quick drink.
The afternoon starts with a cocktail reception before you move to the table for a four-course meal, with accompanying wines, coffee and fudge. The singers perform throughout, and the repertoire pulls from a few different directions. There are solo and group numbers from the big musicals — Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, Blood Brothers, Joseph, West Side Story and Chess — alongside songs from stage and screen by The Beatles, Queen, Celine Dion and Leonard Cohen, and a few traditional favourites mixed in. It's a broad spread, so you'll hear the big theatre numbers and the more familiar songs from the radio in the same afternoon.
The food is as much a part of the day as the music. Head Chef Ashley Binder has signed the menu, and he works with produce grown in the hall's own gardens as well as ingredients from local farmers, so it's a proper York lunch. The whole thing runs from 12:00pm to 3:30pm, with the cocktail reception, the four courses, the wines, the singing, and the coffee and fudge all tucked into those three and a half hours.
