Scandal at the Stage Door - A Murder Mystery

Scandal at the Stage Door comes to the Grand Opera House York on Thursday 27 August, a one-night-only immersive murder mystery set in the glamour and intrigue of the 1920s. It's not a play you watch from a seat; you're in it. You'll work alongside other guests to uncover clues, question suspects and solve the case, with the story bespoke and inspired by the Grand Opera House's own history.

What sets it apart is the access. The evening takes you into exclusive behind-the-scenes areas of the theatre, brought to life by a cast of live actors. You're encouraged to turn up in 1920s attire, and there's a Best Dressed prize for whoever leans into the theme most. The night starts with a welcome drinks reception, and professional event photography is included, so you'll have the evidence of your costume to take home.

The venue itself is a piece of York history. The buildings weren't originally intended to be a theatre; they officially opened in 1902 with Little Red Riding Hood starring Florrie Ford, and were restored in 1987 by the India Pru Co. Ltd. It's a building with its own stories to tell, and this one uses those backstage spaces as part of the experience.

It runs for three hours with no interval, starting at 18:00. Age guidance is 16+, and under-18s must be accompanied by an adult. One practical thing to keep in mind: access is by stairs only, with no lift, so you'll be climbing between the different areas of the theatre as the night unfolds.
