A modern folk music performance by the duo Pen and Stu, featuring original contemporary folk songs, held in the cabaret-style Studio at York Theatre Royal.
Pen and Stu play the Studio at York Theatre Royal on Wednesday 21 October, as part of The Old Paint Shop season, which turns the Studio into a cabaret club with unreserved seating.
They're a modern folk duo from York, known for original contemporary folk. The sound comes from two things: the sonorous melodies of 'BIG' whistles and the resonant strumming of tenor guitars. Pen writes the lyrics and Stu handles the arrangements, and together they draw from a wide well of stories — historical figures, folklore legends, heroes, villains, and pirate queens.
They've played a good range of stages over the years, including the Filey Folk Festival, the Black Swan Folk Weekend here in York, the Whitby Pirate Festival, and the Derby Folk Festival Weekender. In March 2024, they were Folkscape Live's artist of the month, and that same year they released Ravenswood, which FATEA Magazine described as having an 'addictive rhythm'.
