Author Patrick deWitt, known for The Sisters Brothers, presents his novel Dodge City at Topping & Company Booksellers.
Patrick deWitt is coming to Topping & Company Booksellers on Friday 13 November, from 7:00pm to 8:00pm, to talk about his new novel, Dodge City.
If you're not familiar with his name, you've almost certainly heard of The Sisters Brothers, the book that put him on the map. It won the Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize and the Governor General Literary Award, and it made the Booker shortlist back in 2011. He's written five novels now, and Dodge City is the latest.
It's a different beast from the Western territory he's known for. Set in 1967 California, it follows Lee Clarke, a college student who gets expelled after a fistfight and finds himself on an amphetamine-fuelled cross-country road trip, fleeing the Vietnam draft. He's heading for the Canadian border, and along the way he stops to visit every member of his family across four towns. Reviewers have called it a beautiful, sweeping, and raucous portrait of a family in disarray and a country in flux, and a book that confirms deWitt as one of our most brilliant satirists.
