Neighbourhood Pop-up Cafe

St Michael le Belfrey is running a neighbourhood pop-up cafe at The Spurriergate Centre on Saturday 17 October, from 11:00am to 4:00pm. It's a simple one: drinks and homemade cakes in the church of St Michael's on Spurriergate, with the proceeds going to the local neighbourhood and the social action projects the church runs. If you're around the centre on a Saturday morning, it's an easy place to stop for a brew and a slice of cake while putting a bit back into the community.

There's a bit of a story behind the venue, too. St Michael le Belfrey is a Christian church right in the heart of York, and the building itself is currently undergoing a major renovation. While the work is happening, the congregation has moved across the road to the De Grey Rooms, a grade two listed ballroom opposite the art gallery. The pop-up cafe is one of the ways they're keeping things going on Spurriergate while the main church building is out of action.

Life at the Belfrey doesn't stop for the renovations, either. They're still running lunchtime services on Wednesdays and full services on Sundays, and throughout the week there are 'Belfrey Groups'—small gatherings that usually meet in people's homes. The cafe is part of that wider, ongoing presence in the neighbourhood, so it's less a one-off and more a glimpse into what they do day-to-day.
