A pop-up cafe offering drinks and homemade cakes to support the local neighbourhood and the church's charitable activities.
St Michael le Belfrey is running a neighbourhood pop-up cafe at The Spurriergate Centre on Saturday 10 October, from 11am to 4pm. It's a simple one: drinks and homemade cakes, with the proceeds going to the church's local neighbourhood work and the social action projects they take on around the city. If you're out and about in the centre that morning, it's an easy enough stop for a coffee and a slice of something baked by hand.
The cafe is run by St Michael le Belfrey, a Christian church right in the heart of York. It's worth knowing where they're at the moment, because it's a bit of a transitional time for them. The church building itself is undergoing a major renovation, so the congregation is currently meeting in the De Grey Rooms — a grade two listed ballroom just across from the art gallery. It's a temporary home while the main building gets sorted, but it's where they're gathering in the meantime.
Life at the Belfrey keeps going throughout the week, even with the building work. There are lunchtime services on Wednesdays and Sunday services at 9am, 11am and 6pm. Alongside those are the 'Belfrey Groups' — small gatherings that usually take place in people's homes during the week. The pop-up cafe is one of the more public-facing things they're doing, and the money it raises goes back into the community work they do across York.
