Michael Ball

Michael Ball plays the York Barbican on Saturday 12 September, with support from Liss Jones. If you've followed the West End over the last few decades, his name is one of the most familiar in the business. He's a double Olivier Award winner, a Grammy nominee, and a multi-platinum recording artist who's been at the top of his game for over 40 years.

Most of that time has been spent on stage. His theatre credits run long: Javert in Les Misérables - The Staged Concert, Sweeney Todd — for which he won the Olivier for Best Actor in a Musical —, Marius in the original West End cast of Les Misérables, Anatoly in Chess, Mack in Mack and Mabel, Kismet with the English National Opera, The Woman in White, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Passion, The Phantom of the Opera, and Aspects of Love. That's a fair chunk of the musical theatre canon covered by one voice.

He's worked beyond the stage, too. On television, he starred opposite Imelda Staunton in the BBC film That Day We Sang, and he's a well-known radio and TV presenter. He's sold millions of albums across those four decades, and in 2007 he made his BBC Proms debut at the Royal Albert Hall — the first time a musical theatre star had been given a solo concert at the Proms.

It's a big name coming to York, and with Liss Jones supporting, it's a full night of singing. The date is Saturday 12 September at the York Barbican.
