A concert of medieval carols performed by candlelight at the National Centre For Early Music, part of the York Early Music Christmas Festival.
Medieval Carols By Candlelight comes to The National Centre For Early Music on Tuesday 15 December, with the venue lit by candlelight for the evening. It's a programme of medieval carols, and the title tells you exactly what you're getting: carols from the Middle Ages, performed by candlelight.
The concert is part of the York Early Music Christmas Festival, which brings together a selection of the finest Early Music performers from across the UK to celebrate the music of Christmas in the festive surroundings of the city. The festival is promoted by the National Centre For Early Music, whose venue also serves as the concert's home, so this is one of the festival's in-house nights. The carols themselves date back to the medieval period, long before the modern Christmas song became a thing, and they're performed in the same candlelight that would have lit the rooms they were written for.

If you've never been to the NCEM, it's in the city centre at YO1 9TL. The concert falls on Tuesday 15 December, so it's well within the run-up to Christmas, and it sits as one of the festival's offerings that year. The whole thing is put on by the National Centre For Early Music, and since the venue is also the promoter, it's one of the nights they're hosting on their own turf.
