Internal Victories: Film Screening and Q&A

Internal Victories is coming to the Rymer Auditorium at Campus West, University of York on Wednesday 10 March, starting at 6pm. It's a screening of the documentary by Wavelength Films, and the night doesn't end when the credits roll: pianist Clare Hammond will perform music from the project, followed by a Q&A with composer Michael Betteridge, hosted by University of York Associate Lecturer Emily Crossland.

The film itself follows Betteridge and Hammond as they co-create pieces for solo piano with prisoners at HMP Oakwood in Staffordshire. It's a look at how music can work as a tool for building community and as an agent of hope, connection and transformation. The project was supported by public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England, with grants also from The Gloucestershire Piano Trust, The Marchus Trust and Leigh Day Solicitors.

Having the music performed live after the screening lets you hear the actual pieces the film is built around, and the Q&A gives you a chance to hear from Betteridge himself about how the work came together. It's a full evening that takes you from the film to the music and then into the conversation behind it.

Entry is free, though you'll need to book your place in advance. The screening starts at 6pm at the Rymer Auditorium on the University's Campus West.
