Imperial Classical Ballet returns with a new season of Swan Lake, featuring a live Tchaikovsky score, at the York Barbican.
Imperial Classical Ballet are back at York Barbican on Monday 19 October with Swan Lake, the first date of a new season following their previous tours. It's a full-length production of the classic, and the one thing that sets it apart from a recorded version is the music: Tchaikovsky's score is performed live, so you'll have a live orchestra in the room rather than a track running in the background.

If you're not familiar with the story, it's the one about Princess Odette, cursed to live as a swan by day and a woman by night. Prince Siegfried discovers her under the moonlight and promises to break the spell, but the wicked sorcerer Rothbart and his daughter Odile plot a betrayal that puts them both at risk. The production leans into the lakeside scenes and the Black Swan pas de deux, and with the music being played live, those moments land with a bit more weight than they do on a recording.
It's a performance for ballet and dance fans, and it works as a family outing too โ the only thing to keep in mind is that anyone under 14 needs to be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over. If you're thinking of bringing the kids, that's the one detail to check before you book.
Tickets are on sale now, and there's a booking fee on top of the ticket price. If you're after something a bit more, there are VIP hospitality options available as well. The performance starts at 19:30 on Monday 19 October at York Barbican.
