An early music concert by the ensemble Imago Mundi, reimagining John Dowland's Lachrimae with Armenian traditional music.
Imago Mundi comes to the National Centre for Early Music on Monday 6 July, as part of the York Early Music Festival. The main feature is Tears into Light, a contemporary reimagining of John Dowland's Lachrimae. Dowland's original set of seven pavanas has been rearranged and interspersed with traditional Armenian music, and the ensemble describes the result as a journey between grief and transcendence, a meditation on resilience.
Sofie Vanden Eynde directs the performance and plays lute, with Eugénie De Mey on voice and Vardan Hovanissian on duduk. Vladimir Gorlinsky handles the composition and arrangements, Fleur Pierets provides the lyrics, and Ria Verhaeghe is responsible for the visuals. It's a small ensemble, but the combination of lute, voice, and duduk brings together the English Renaissance and Armenian tradition in a single room.

The concert runs from 20:30 to 21:30 at the NCEM in St Margaret's Church, Walmgate. Tickets are £30 (£28 for concessions) with reserved seating, and £10 for under-35s, with a £1.50 booking fee per transaction.
