Robert Lloyd Parry brings Hide, Watson! Two Adventures by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to Theatre@41 on Sunday 12 July, a one-man stage adaptation of two Sherlock Holmes stories. It's part of a wider tour that takes the show to The Rondo Theatre in Bath, The Leeds Library, and The Lit & Phil in Newcastle throughout July, so York is one of a handful of stops on the run.
The evening pairs two very different cases. The first is The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton, where Dr John Watson joins Holmes on a mission that's legally dubious to begin with, as they set out to clear London of one of its worst criminals. The second is The Adventure of the Dying Detective, a complete shift in tone that finds Watson trying to save Holmes from his own mortality. Between the two, you get the Holmes and Watson you'd expect: the high-stakes chase and the quiet, desperate worry for a friend.
Parry handles both stories on his own, taking on the roles of the detective, the doctor, and the various characters that cross their paths. He's described by The Times Literary Supplement as one of the country's most idiosyncratic and underrated performers, and that's a fair place to start if you're wondering how one man manages a whole cast of Holmesian figures. It's a show for anyone who likes the original stories, but it works just as well if you're just in for a night of theatre.
