Polish-Belarusian band performing traditional dances and songs from eastern Poland on acoustic village instruments, with audience encouraged to dance.
Hajda Banda play the National Centre for Early Music on Friday 9 October, from 7.30pm to around 8.45pm. They're a Polish-Belarusian band specialising in the traditional dances and songs of eastern Poland's Podlasie region, the western provinces of Belarus and the wetlands of Polesye — a cultural crossroads on the Poland-Ukraine-Belarus border. The show is presented in association with Songlines Encounters, and the audience is encouraged to dance.
They play exclusively on acoustic village instruments: violin, hammered dulcimer, three-row Polish accordion and frame drum. The set blends the rural music of those borderlands with a style they've made their own, and everyone on stage sings. The line-up is Daria Butskaya on violin and voice, Kuba Zimończyk on three-row accordion and voice, Paweł Iwan on hammered dulcimer and voice, and Mateusz Dobrowolski on frame drum and voice.

It's a short one, just over an hour, so if you're planning to dance, you'll have plenty of time to get home afterwards. Tickets are £22, with concessions at £20 and under-35s at £8, plus a £1.50 administration fee per transaction. The venue is St Margaret's Church on Walmgate, YO19TL.
