Pop Yer Clogs Theatre presents a bold new adaptation of Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus, reimagining the story with Doctor Joan Faustus.
Pop Yer Clogs Theatre are bringing Doctor Faustus to Theatre@41 this autumn, with performances running from Thursday 1 October to Saturday 3 October. It's a new adaptation of Christopher Marlowe's play, and the biggest change from the original is right in the title: the lead is Doctor Joan Faustus instead of the Doctor Faustus Marlowe wrote in the 16th century.
From there, the story follows the one you probably know. Joan strikes a bargain with Lucifer, and she's guided through it by her demonic companion Mephistopheles. The company describes it as a darkly comic, gothic tale of ambition, excess and damnation, and they've drawn on the traditions of Commedia dell'arte for the staging. If you're familiar with the original, you'll recognise the core of it — the deal with the devil and the price that comes with it — but with the gender swap and the Commedia influence, it's a different take on the material.
