Denys Baptiste & Gary Crosby

Denys Baptiste and Gary Crosby bring a tribute to John Coltrane's A Love Supreme to the National Centre for Early Music on Wednesday 25 November. It's a big night for jazz in York: A Love Supreme is widely regarded as the greatest jazz album of all time, and this concert marks the 60th anniversary of its recording.

Baptiste is on saxophone and Crosby on double bass, joined by Andrew McCormack on piano and Rod Youngs on drums. It's a full quartet around the record, and there's a bit more to the evening than just the main set. The NCEM is staging the night alongside local young jazz players, who work with the band earlier in the day and then share their own work on stage during the concert. So you'll get the tribute and some new music from the city's younger scene in one go.

There's a fair bit of history behind the names on the bill. Gary Crosby OBE is a bassist, band leader and co-founder of Tomorrow's Warriors, a Mercury Prize nominee and a MOBO award winner. He describes hearing A Love Supreme for the first time as a life-changing moment, and as musically close to a spiritual moment as he's ever had. Denys Baptiste was born in Hounslow to St Lucian parents in 1969; he's an award-winning jazz artist, composer and educator, known for making complex music accessible through mature, melodic and memorable writing. Together they're taking on one of the most celebrated records in the jazz canon.

The concert runs from 7.20pm to around 9.30pm. Tickets are £28, with concessions at £26 and under-35s at £10, plus a £1.50 administration fee per transaction.
