Live Northern Soul Orchestra show with Darrell Smith and Grace Curran, as seen on BBC Proms.
Darrell Smith and the Soul Brothers Syndicate bring their Northern Soul Orchestra to the York Theatre Royal on Thursday 2 July, starting at 19:30 in the Main House. It's the same show they took to the BBC Proms, and it's built around an 18-piece orchestra playing through the history of Northern Soul.
The set is told chronologically, so it doesn't just run through the songs but follows the scene's timeline. It starts with the early days at the Twisted Wheel in Manchester and the Golden Torch in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, and works its way through to the Blackpool Mecca and the Wigan Casino. Along the way, they cover the classics: The Drifter, The Night, I'm On My Way, There's A Ghost in My House, Run for Cover, Temptation Is Calling My Name, The Snake, If That's What You Wanted, Dance, Dance, Dance, Open The Door To Your Heart, What, Better Use Your Head, Out on The Floor, and plenty more.
Up front, the quartet is led by Darrell Smith, with Grace Curran on vocals. They describe the show as playing less tribute and more homage to Northern Soul, and they keep it loose, with a bit of spontaneous spirit and humour to each night. The 18-piece orchestra provides the full sound behind them, so you're hearing these tracks played out in full rather than as a small-band version.
