Clinton Baptiste brings his new show, Spectral Intercourse, to the York Barbican on Saturday 27 February 2027. If you're not familiar with the name, he's the clairvoyant medium who first appeared in Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights and has since carved out a whole career playing the part. This is his fifth tour around the UK, coming after a fourth that ran across the country.
The premise of Spectral Intercourse is exactly what you'd expect from the character: Baptiste presents himself as a sort of envoy for humanity in a world that's lost its way, tasked with gathering solutions from the other side for the queries and dilemmas the audience brings to the table. It's a show built on that interaction, with him taking on the room's questions and playing them out with the same earnest, otherworldly persona he's known for. He describes it as handling the audience's concerns with sensitivity, though the punchline is always the absurdity of the situation.
He's not the only one talking him up. Joe Lycett calls him 'the funniest man alive', Rob Brydon says 'he's such a funny man, I love him', and Chris Moyles describes the act as 'absolutely hilarious'. It's a good idea to keep in mind that the whole thing is a character piece — the medium is the joke as much as the punchlines are — so it works best if you go in knowing that's the game he's playing.
