Concert by the Cappella Lacensis choral ensemble performing motets by Bach and Mendelssohn at Ampleforth Abbey.
Cappella Lacensis are performing at Ampleforth Abbey on Wednesday 22 July, a mid-week evening of motets in the abbey church. They're visiting from the Maria Laach Abbey in Germany, so this is a visiting ensemble rather than a local one.
The programme brings together two names that don't usually share a bill: Johann Sebastian Bach and Felix Mendelssohn. Both wrote motets — choral works for voices without orchestral accompaniment — and that's exactly what they'll be singing. Bach's motets are some of his most enduring choral writing, and Mendelssohn's bring a different, later Romantic sensibility to the same form, so you'll hear two distinct eras of church music in one sitting.
