Andy Irvine with Quilty

Andy Irvine plays the National Centre for Early Music on Sunday 27 September, from 6.30pm to around 8.30pm. He's performing with the Swedish folk band Quilty, and the set mixes Irish and Swedish traditional music. The night is part of the University of York's annual Baroque+ Day, which takes over the NCEM and walks visitors through the 18th-century horticultural craze, the early-19th-century 'guitar mania', and the legendary Devil's Tavern on Fleet Street, where Handel's rivals gathered to share their latest compositions.

Irvine is one of the great Irish singers, a masterful teller of tales whose voice reaches the very soul of the country and who has maintained his highly individual performing skills throughout a 60-year career. From Sweeney's Men to Planxty and Patrick Street, he's been an icon for traditional music and for musicians. This concert follows a tour of Sweden with Quilty, staged to celebrate the band's 30th anniversary year, and the programme blends the two traditions.

On stage, Irvine handles bouzouki, mandola and vocals. Quilty provides the rest of the sound: Dag Westling on guitar, vocal, five-string banjo and tin whistle; Gideon Andersson on bouzouki, mandolin, bodhrán and vocal; Esbjörn Hazelius on fiddle, guitar and vocal; and Staffan Lindfors on double bass. The review by The Seantí in Ireland called it a performance that 'won't easily be bettered or forgotten'.

Tickets are £24, with concessions at £22 and under-35s at £8. The concert runs from 6.30pm to about 8.30pm at the NCEM, St Margaret's Church, Walmgate, York YO1 9TL.
