An executive dining experience celebrating local Yorkshire game including pheasant, fallow deer, mallard and partridge, set during the Great British Game Season.
The Abbey Inn at Byland is running a dinner series called A Celebration of British Game, with this particular evening on Thursday 12 November. It's part of a three-night run set during the Great British Game Season, and the whole point is to celebrate Yorkshire game gathered from the land around the pub. Each of the three dinners is a different expression of the season, with the menus evolving based on what the land provides.
Executive Chef Callum Leslie and Head Chef Duncan Moran are the ones behind the menus, which feature local game like pheasant, fallow deer, mallard and partridge. Leslie was named the BASC & Eat Game Awards' Best Game Chef 2026, and he and Moran pair the game with seasonal accompaniments from The Abbey Inn's own family farm and kitchen garden. The game itself comes from the landscapes of Oldstead and Byland, including Newburgh Priory, which is just two miles away.
The venue is a nineteenth-century historic inn turned cosy country pub, with bedrooms that look out over the ruins of Byland Abbey. It serves seasonal menus by Chef Director Tommy Banks, alongside local ales and seasonal cocktails. It was named Sustainable Pub of the Year at the Gastro Pub Awards 2025 and awarded Best Sunday Roast in the UK by The Good Food Guide in 2024.
